1,000 Books Before Kindergarten poster with turtle mascot

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Thank you for participating in 1,000 Books before Kindergarten, a free program that encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before he or she begins Kindergarten.

The Goal:
The concept is simple, but the rewards are priceless! Read a book (any book!) to your newborn, infant, or toddler. The goal is to read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books!) before your child starts Kindergarten.

Get Started:
1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a self-paced program that has no end date except your child starting school. You decide how often and how long you read. Reading 3 books per day for 1 year equals 1,095 books, but 1 book per day for 3 years also equals 1,095 books. The key is perseverance! Celebrate milestones with us at the library as you make progress, and above all, read and enjoy with your child.
1. Start logging the books you read with your child on a log sheet. You can log any book read to your child - that includes books read by siblings, teachers, and librarians, as well as re-reads of favorite stories.
2. At every 100 book milestone, bring your log into the library. We will celebrate your child’s success and they will receive a small prize, sticker, and log sheet for the next 100 books.
3. When your child reaches 1,000 books, he or she will receive a free book, sticker, certificate of achievement, and the option to have their picture added to our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Hall of Fame.

Happy Reading!
